I blame false statistics, "Hide the Decline" and millennial 'end of the world' religious psychosis, for the need to buy indulgences/carbon credits to save ones soul.
The main issue is shysters intent on bringing in a form of world taxation (carbon credits) run through the already morally and financial bankrupt merchant banking system (carbon exchanges).
If all the politicians and brainless celebrities who proclaim the end is nigh actually believed it then they would stop flying by private jet to international junkets on the subject and they would stop flapping their traps about it, because both dump unbelievable amounts of hot air into the atmosphere.
