LED Car Headlights, which ones

Post by rodp » 22 Dec 2015, 18:04

Right gents, I'm about brassed off with all these new high end cars hurtling towards me with super bright headlights. Mine are perfectly adequate but once these laser beams have passed it takes about 20 minutes for my eyes to readjust. Quite a common problem according to Mr Google.
It seems led headlights are now available in H4 pattern, and more or less drop in after fitting heat sink / fan etc. I've just bought another Disco after searching for six months or so and looking at fitting these led lights (if you can't beat em join em).

Question is, are there any recommendations, anyone fitted any? Preferably the 3600 lumen or better. It seems DX used to do them but can't find any on there now (can't find much else either to be truthful, websites gone to pot)

Sounded interesting so I had a quick look for 'led car light H4' and found this http://www.dx.com/p/mz-h4-100w-high-pow ... nnQ4Vn_YVY and there's quite a few more as well.
Don't know how well they would get on with the lighting bus in the car though.

Better check with VOSA on this.
I seem to remember that aftermarket HID lamp kits are an MOT fail if they are not original equipment in the vehicle.
By the same argument LED headlamps would also be an MOT fail.

I think technically they should be a fail Bruce, but as an acquaintance who's "a vosa man" pointed out, most test stations don't even bother checking beam patterns etc. They just turn on headlights, flick to main and turn them off. It would be simple enough to put bulbs back in for mot anyway.

Don't think that one has dipped beam, I did however continue searching and found one with main and dip on DX. Unfortunately it's out of stock. Been googling and some folk say led is great, others not impressed. So, still none the wiser and it may be £40 / £50 down the drain.

After market HID bulb kits are NOT MOT failure. This because they do not emit the same light output as factory fitted ones. Also factory fitted ones HAVE to have a cleaning devise and auto hieght adjustment fitted under the vehicle [ I am a MOT TESTER ].I have HID bulbs fitted to one of my vehicles and they are great. It sends out a pure white light . My main beam is a H1 and you can see the yellowing of that one.I did purchase some LED headlight bulbs and they were like a candle. Try Euro Parts for the kit .

The stuff we got over here is junk. And, I got a feeling it's the same junk you guys have available to you.

There are plenty of HID kits available...problem is a conventional bulb, head lamp bucket is set up to reflect a conventional bulb. Stick in the HID bulb, and the light is out of focus...you don't gain any real light performance (actually loose light), you get pulled over by the police for having your "high beams" on...and in the end, you just drop extra money to make your headlamps glow blue.

The LEDs are in the same boat. You buy a very expensive bulb, that promises all kinds of candle power. After you stick it in the housing, you realize its out of focus and you get less light.

LED bulbs here are sold "for show". If you have a "Show Car" that doesn't get driven and you want to add something to make it custom, you add LEDs. For the rest of us that take the road-of-reality to work every morning, $10 conventional H7s are fine.

Now, there's some side marker bulbs on the Frogvision Hyundai that got swapped out for LEDs. It took me 2.5 hrs to pop out both tail lamp units to replace the side clearance bulbs. At that kind of struggle, it's getting LEDs...so I don't have to replace them again.
