Dave, I think I stuck to those guidelines for my avatar. Just searched the web until I found something that size, I seem to remember.
I'm sure the size restriction is there so that we're not bogged down when everyone ends up having an epic movie for an avatar.
I'll ask our technical department about it

I've just checked and I think that mine is 73.47kb but it's within the 100 x 100 limit.

The one I have in mind is 79x100, 14.4 KB.
