IR torches that are silent to turn on

Post by Spanner » 15 Oct 2017, 17:46

What is available I have a NM800 and a Clive Ward T67 but both scare Foxes at close range on still nights due to their noisy tail switches. Can anything be done to make them silent and if not what IR torches are out there that are silent to turn on?

The switch on these torches cannot be modified to be silent. I use a modified, silent rat tail switch. Another way to switch on and off without noise is: unscrew the tailcap just as much as needed to switch off. You can then operate the torch by screwing on without any noise.

The tail switch on the IC nightmaster is pretty much silent. I have one here.

There's not a lot to be done as you have to use a separate IR torch for most add on rigs - and most use the budget torches with tail cap clicky switches. I don't think that was an issue with the older lasers. It could be worth trying a bit of 1" pipe lagging slid over the rear end to muffle the click a bit.

I use almost silent switches for my integrated torches - one of these if you fancy messing about with your power supply route, they will 'half press' like the tail cap switch for cycling through the power levels:
