Which Torch setup.

Postby tasr12 » 11 Oct 2017, 11:03

I'm new to night shooting and the budget is tight so could I please have recommendations for a decent, sensibly priced, scope mounted torch. It will be going on a .243 and if possible I'd like to be able to shoot out to 150m with a red pill? The ability to switch to IR would be useful but not essential as I've already got a workable setup for this.

Is there a setup/torch out there that will achieve this for sensible money? I was looking at a T67 but think it's quite bulky? Or an EVO T50?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I have twin battery t67 in red that I don’t use for same reasoning you state to bulky, if 150 yards is all your after the humble t20 will do the job just fine and is compact, I still own one in red and have green pill also which is very good, don’t use much these days now I have the drone

An Evo 50 will sit nicely between the T20 and T67 and is quite a bit lighter than the latter.

Somebloke,

That's really useful thanks. The guy selling the T67 is stating its way better than an Evo 50....obviously.

Have you used an Evo in red, will it reach out to 150m or is there anything you'd recommend at around the £50 mark?

Thing is you got to think of the usable image size of the led fully focused , the t67 will give you a tight beam, alright in white with a larger die size but in red be a lot smaller, be really tight looking through the scope.A decent 50mm lens works well with a red led , give you plenty of legs to 150 yds and a decent spread of light, personally wouldnt go past a 50mm lens in colours.....

Poppy Mae,

Thanks but in my ignorance are you saying the T67 would be better or worse than an Evo 50 in red?

Cheers.

When the led is fully focused it produces a square of light , the t67 lens combined with the small red led size , will produce a laserlike tight beam, good for distance but the square of light isnt big, so limits your field of view, on a 50mm lens combined with a red led will give you a larger square, probably 2-3 times the size with a better field of view, this is because most red leds used are made by cree and are only approx 3mm square. The white xlm leds commonly used are a lot bigger so throw a biggersquare of light. So it all comes down to preference, and what you can see through your scope, for me a red/coloured cree led in a 50mm lens is about max for most uses .....if buy a coloured led make sure its a decent one, some are dull as dishwater.

I'm with pops - I think the 67 has too tight a beam unless you specifically want to use high scope mag with a narrow field of view that makes it quite hard to acquire and maintain your target.

Ok - just so I’m clear - the Evo 50 with the red LED is the way to go for 150m ish shooting? It will be on a 3-12x50 scope.

i have used a t50 mk1 with a good red led for several seasons now as a scope mounted job to great effect, recently tried a amber xp-e2 led in same torch and find it a very good light more so on grassland, worth having 1 ov each for sure.
