ej230 / e700 killer camera

Post by jamez » 03 Oct 2013, 19:59

After reading Sony sensor datasheets I just had to try a camera with the ICX632BKA sensor !
Typical sensor sensitivty of 3800mV vs 2400mV for the ICX672 is a pretty gain.
Less resolution often means less read noise also because of a lower readout frequency.

Only cam I was able to source up was these:
box: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shi ... 00095.html
mini: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1-3-SONY ... 32869.html
bullet: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1-3-SONY ... 01594.html

So I got the box one - because of the CS-mount.
Camera arrived quickly. And I've done some comparisons with my EJ230. Unfortunately no recordings for you. And unfortunately not tried with IR light.
The middle (white) part of the box camera is actually all empty! Camera board sit in the front part, right behind the lens mount.
The rear part holds the OSD pcb with connectors and buttons. So you can modify it to a really short build.
If not using C/CS-mount you'll probably better of with the mini.

So how does it perform?
I can tell you this much - I did a "smallest-fstop-able-to-read-resolution-charts-test":
With sense-up disabled you still have about half a f-stop better sensitivity than the ej230.
With sense-up at 4x it is up to about 2 stops better.
Not bad for a 50$ camera, eh?

Contrast is noticably better than the ej230. It has less noise and also seem to have better highlights/less burnouts, better dynamic range...
And it has enough settings to make a good custom setup where you can go from bright light to no light with good exposures with no need to adjust anything. The extra resolution of the EJ230 only show in really good light, and only on my 800x640 monitor.

I prefer it over the ej230 - and I'm now planning a scopeless build of this camera...

I would say this camera is a really good find!

I'm waiting to hear how you get on with ir,it sounds like a good find. I notice they list a similar spec camera but with 650TVL, have you looked at this?

The 650tvl use an icx639 sensor. 2250mV - so about the same as the ej230.
The whole point is to have the low res sensor with large photosites!

I nearly purchased this box camera but didn't like the size. Would love a comparison video against the ej230 though.

Jamez does that camera have the Effio CDX 4140 DSP?
if not, what are the chip #"s on the back of the camera board?
Thanks

No, this one is a 480TVL with low res/large pitch sensor...

Couldn't find a number on the chip, but judging from the meny features this one is an Effio-S (4130).
It has D-wdr, no real-wdr.
4140 does not have sense-up.

again, this is a high res camera with small pixels. I dont know how they would get that super low lux rating. My guess is that it is worse than the ej230, and the rating is a calculated rating at 1024x sense-up...

I'll see if I can make a short video comparing the two for you.

I cannot imagine anyone would not prefer 4x sense-up over noise - and then the 2 stop improvement makes a great difference! (just try to change your lens from F2.0 down to f4.0 to see how much those two stops matter)

A small amount of sense up does work well but probably not so good for spotting if you are sweeping across the field of view but it can always be turned down if necessary. It's unlikely that anyone would want to shoot fast moving animals using an add-on nv unit so on a scope it doesn't really notice at all.
